Last Wednesday, the AP US History classes had the chance to watch dramatic storyteller Christian Hege tell his rendition of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Hege’s story lasted about 20 minutes, actually focusing in on the personality and past of Lincoln’s assassinator, John Wilkes Booth. The class was frozen in complete silence as they watched Hege accompany his vocal performance with a visual one consisting of dramatic movements and pauses.

After Hege finished his story, the class applauded furiously and began to ask him questions about the masterpiece he created. Hege explained a plethora of personal stories to the class, from how his curly-cue moustache is actually his beard to how poetry has helped him clear his head among challenges in life. Hege, who formerly was a composer and music director, stated how it is actually easier for him to write in iambic pentameter, as it gives him a platform to clearly articulate and rhyme words.

Resident APUSH teacher and school nerd Mr. Shark exclaimed “[Hege] was riveting. He was enthusiasm. He was passion. He was exceptional.”  Junior Simone Fortin stated how “It was very fun and interesting to have a different teaching style [while learning about] such an iconic event in history.” The storytelling experience was more than just a story. It was a compelling, informative way to reach students and reach a new level of understanding regarding Lincoln’s assassination.”

This is the first time Hege has told one of his stories at Rye High School, but hopefully he will return to share his other stories in the future!
