The League Champion Rye Varsity Girls traveled to Nyack High School on Saturday for a tennis event promoting Breast Cancer Awareness. The Nyack coach and Rye High School class of 1982 alum, Josh Weinman, organized the event which had specific meaning to him this year. Addressing the girls before the matches he thanked them, welcomed them, and explained that the event was especially meaningful to him this year with close family and friends both in recovery or currently battling breast cancer.

The Nyack players did a wonderful job of preparing the courts for the day with pink streamers on the nets, pink balloons strung to the net posts, pink tennis balls for the matches, and a dynamic Nyack/Rye pink logo on a banner. With a banner on hand the potential for this becoming an annual event becomes even more of a possibility. Coach Weinman’s family provided all of the players with a goody bag including a pink t-shirt emblazoned with the logo and pink ribbbon for the girls to wear. A delicious brunch spread was provided by the Nyack parents.

The Rye girls brought the music and the competition. As an informal match, players went on in newly formed doubles pairs to play single sets before rotating out. With a large team and excellent turnout, most of the Rye girls played a set or two, while many of the Nyack girls played three or four sets. Even Coach Weinman played with his freshmen daughter Elodie against Coach Campbell and Rye junior Elena Nunez to the delight of the crowd. It was a great way to wrap up the season.

Rye senior Olivia Guarnieri said, “It was a very festive event that contributes to a great cause, and it was cool to see Campbell’s hometown. We were all impressed with how many people from the town came out to watch tennis and hang out.”
