The Garnet Mine online news website, a product of the class Web Journalism, will slow down its coverage considerably over the summer. The launch of the Garnet Mine this year was a successful one with the class of 22 juniors and seniors posting over 500 hundred articles including diverse coverage of school sports, daily profiles of students, movie reviews, restaurant reviews, editorials, and breaking national, international, and local news.

Some highlights of the year included video interviews of students and teachers, photo essays, and the sometimes informative and often humorous “Student of the Day” features.

Next year a new crop of students will join the staff and the returning students will act as leaders of the publication each acting as editor of a section of the website.

The Mine is hoping to find some dedicated photographers for the staff as well to improve the visual appeal of the site. Soon to be senior Hall Luthringer said, “I think we need to start taking better photos of athletes, staff, and students around the building. Quality photos will draw more visitors to the Mine and intrigue them to read the articles we spend all that time working on.”

News editor Michael Weinstein added, “If we had dedicated photographers making sure to get good photos for all of the posts would definitely make the site more eye-catching.”

One of the goals of the Mine will be to get more interaction and involvement with the school community. On average the website got about one thousand hits a week, but the goal of the Marketing Editor is to make the Mine more a regular part of the daily experience of every Rye High School student.

Sports editor Ben Grigg said, “Its important that we get more quotes from more sources in the school.”

Congratulations to the staff on the inaugural year of the Garnet Mine.
