Students and parents enjoy the work at the opening. The portraits were hung “salon style” with a mix of work from middle school and high school classes.

For the past four years, the Rye Arts Center has generously provided gallery space for the Rye Middle School and High School Art and Design departments to hold a thematic exhibition of student work. This year the exhibition is called “Familiar Faces” and includes approaches to portraiture in a range of materials and techniques including; painting, drawing, digital photography, digital imaging, black and white photography, and mixed media. The work is hung throughout the main floor of the Rye Arts Center. The well attended opening was on Thursday May 18th, and the work will remain on display until June 9th.

Many community members commented on the quality of the work, the talent of our students, and the diverse visual arts instruction available to the young artists. English teacher, and Zephyr Literary magazine adviser George Krajca said, “We justifiably should be proud of our academic achievements, but we often lose sight of how many artists we have in our student body and how successful our art program is having those students reach their fullest potential”.

Digital Photography teacher Ms. Chiffriller discusses the exhibition.

For the students who had work hanging in the gallery it was exciting to see their creations displayed in a professional setting. For many it was their first time in a public art exhibition outside of the school hall ways. Freshmen Studio Art student Darcy Kinstel said, “My father went by and took a photo of my painting and texted it to my mom who texted it to everyone about my painting being in the show. Everyone was so happy that I had a painting hanging in the Arts Center – it was a little overwhelming.”

The gallery was full for the exhibition for the majority of the evening.
