This year’s US Squash High School Nationals took place at a number of prep schools in the Hartford Connecticut area. The Rye Girl’s Varsity Team 1 played their matches at Westminster Prep School. They came in tied for third place and were not able to play it out because of the snow storm which delayed the tournament. Rye lost to New Jersey prep school, Pingry, in the semifinals.
However, they came in first place for public schools and qualified to play in division 2 out of 5 girls divisions. This year 3 other strong public school girls teams were in Division 2 and Rye defeated two of them (Conestoga and HLM) on the way to the semifinals. The other strong program , New Haven High Schools, Rye swept twice this year in league play. There were nearly 1500 players from around the country at Nationals.
Junior and Rye 1 player, Ainsley Shultz, said “Nationals was such a bonding experience. I consider everyone on the team family and Nationals only brought us closer. It was very emotional.”
Manager, Izzy Kasha, said “This team is like family. We cheered each other on and supported each other so much. It was so exciting to watch the intense matches they had. They all played so well. We were all extremely emotional when it came to an end. They are all such amazing players and people. I was so lucky to manage them this season.”
Coach, Mr. Campbell, said, “The girls all played their best squash of the season. Even though we didn’t win the tournament we came in third, which is our best Nationals finish, and all the girls really love being together for the weekend. It’s always sad to have our season end, especially this year – they are a close group.”
