Deep Dive: A Psychoanalysis on Healing Crystals

Abby Bozek

Healing crystals: they soothe the mind. I’m not here to discuss whether or not they work in this piece of content, but rather why some believe in and utilize their supposed healing properties. So, why do they?

It can easily be summarized in just a few words: hope, comfort, and faith. It is along the same lines as religion; possessing the knowledge that there is someone/something out there protecting you and that everything happens for reason is a comforting idea. Having that nurturing energy is often something humans attach themselves to, as more often than not that is what will get them through their day. This is the same idea as healing crystals. Knowing that the energy you put out into the universe will find its way back to you, that everything happens for a reason, and the idea that a crystal can possess healing qualities can help soothe minds. For example, if someone struggles with depression and they purchase a carnelian crystal (good for depression and motivation) because of their situation and start to feel better, who is to tell them that those positive feelings are invalid? If it is to be a placebo, it is a good placebo. Believing that a crystal will bring good fortune very well may end in good fortune. Knowing that it will come someday because you have this beautiful crystal plays back to the nurturing, comforting feeling that is brought onto a person when they own a crystal.

People who purchase crystals are generally doing it for a reason — whether it be hard times (ex. financially), anxiety, depression, or a bad relationship there are reasons for buying crystals. Taking the ease off a negative situation and placing it into a crystal, such as helenite (a crystal that absorbs negative energy), gives the individual a sense of peace (for however long it may last). This peace allows them to see more clearly, and they may help their own situation. Their newfound peace would not have been achieved if not for their crystal. So at the end of the day, I only see crystals having a positive effect on one’s state of mind.
