The Comeback of the Entertainment Industry: Films to Look Out for during 2020 and 2021

maya egan

For the past six months, the entertainment industry has been historically quiet, with many films halting production and release dates being pushed back due to the closure of movie theatres. Now that the height of the pandemic is over –for now– movies are back in production, and countless highly anticipated films are finally beginning to release within the coming months.

Now, let’s get into the fun part and discuss some of the most anticipated movies coming out during the remainder of 2020 and sporadically during 2021. These movies are in no particular order.

  1. Nomadland

Starring Frances McDormand and directed by Chloe Zhao, this film took the entertainment industry by storm after its premiere during the Venice film festival. This film follows McDormand, a middle-aged woman who becomes a modern-day nomad. McDormand leaves her small hometown in Nevada by van to travel within different cities in the west and midwest. Critics praised Zhao’s direction and screenplay and McDormand’s phenomenal performance as the contemporary nomad. This film is a strong contender for major awards this upcoming awards season, with many predicting that it will be nominated for best picture for the 2021 Oscars. I personally can’t wait until it is released to the public later this year with all of the hype surrounding this movie.

  1. Dune

Sorry to be predictable, but I just had to add this movie to the list. Dune is based on a sci-fi novel, and it is basically a battle between different groups to seize Melange, an essential natural resource. Not to generalize, but practically every teen girl anticipates this movie’s release because of the iconic cast: Timotheé Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Mamoa, David Bautista, Rebbeca Ferguson, and more well-known names. With every girl ever obsessing over Timotheé Chalamet, this movie is expected to do very well in the box office. But, it is also important to note that this film is a remake, so even though it has a stacked cast, it can still be a huge hit or miss. Unfortunately, this film’s release has been delayed another year, and is expected to be released on October 1st,2021.

3. Cherry

Cherry is an American crime film starring Tom Holland as an opioid addict that also struggles with PTSD because of his past as an army medic. Holland turns to crime to deal with his accumulated debt because of his addiction. This movie is affiliated with Apple TV because Apple believes it has great potential to be a big winner this awards season. Another exciting aspect of this movie is that the directors are actually the same individuals that directed Avengers: Endgame, directors Joe and Anthony Russo. After Tom Holland’s phenomenal performance in the Netflix film The Devil All the Time, I am very excited to watch this film. I am blown away by Tom Holland’s newfound diversity as an actor, so I can’t wait to watch his newest movie, Cherry.

  1. Rebecca

Rebecca premieres in just a few weeks, on October 21st. This movie is about how Max De Winter (Armie Hammer) hides many secrets regarding his late spouse, Rebecca, from his new spouse, Mrs. De Winter. Mrs. De Winter continually lives in Rebecca’s shadow and has to unpack the mystery behind her death because Max refuses to touch on the matter. Being an Armie Hammer stan, the fact that he stars in this movie was the initial reason why this movie caught my eye. But the more I read about the plot, the more fascinated and excited I get for the release of this movie.

  1. Don’t Worry, Darling.

Last but certainly not least, is the highly anticipated film, Don’t Worry, Darling. This cast is filled with untouchables: Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, Dakota Johnson, Olivia Wilde, and more. Since this movie is still in pre-production, not much about the plot has been released, but what is known is that it is a thriller and utopian period piece based on the 1950s. The movie stars Florence Pugh, an angry housewife, but that’s basically the extent of what the public knows about the film. I am excited to watch Harry Styles’ performance because I loved his work in the wartime movie, Dunkirk, and can’t wait to see how he embodies his new character. Also, I’m a huge thriller fan, so with all of these components, this film is bound for success.

As a movie lover, I’ve been craving new films to watch and review, and this list of movies gives me much hope towards the near future of the movie industry. You may be wondering, Maya, how do you plan on watching these films? And the answer is, I’m not sure. Due to COVID, the safest option is to stream it on my TV, but at the same time, there’s nothing like the ambiance of the movie theatre where I’m transformed from the real world and devoting all of my attention to the film. Let’s hope that movie theatres stay afloat so once it’s safe to do so, we are able to sit back in the comfortable movie chairs with popcorn in one hand and a slushy in the other, enjoying quality films.
