The Athlete of The Week this week is a senior captain, Clare Cassidy. She has played both squash and tennis all four years in high school. This has earned her a captain spot for each sport. It’s her fourth year on varsity squash and she has stepped up this season, in leading by example. At practices and events, Clare is the first to arrive and last to leave. This has helped her as she is at the highest ranking for the team, as number two. Furthermore, she won her match against Rye Country Day. Out of the five games, she swept the series in winning the first three. This was a huge win to kick off the season, in giving the team confidence and momentum for what lies ahead.
Every year, the team has a tradition to take a weekend to go play in the Nationals Tournament. This gives the team great competition to help give them the edge when they return to play out the rest of their season. After going on the trip for three years Clare remarks the trip as a great experience due to the immense team bonding. From staying in a hotel together to the team dinners, “it is something that the whole team looks forward to throughout the season” Clare adds. The trip helps bring team morale up, as everyone is extremely supportive during matches. This year she hopes that the team can win their division through hard work, and taking a lead role in the team’s success.
The close bond with herself and the team has helped shape her high school experience. It reminded Clare to always work hard, and do things for the greater good. As of now, she is not being recruited for squash but hopes that she is able to walk on. However, for now, she is focused and excited about what the rest of the season will bring.
