As the Christmas season is approaching, theatergoers and ballet lovers have their tickets to The Nutcracker performed at Lincoln Center in Manhattan.  But did you know that there is a professional ballet production much closer to Rye as well

The Nutcracker Dream, at the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck, will be performed by Westchester’s premier dance company and pre-professional conservatory, Ballet Des Amériques, on December 15th, 21st, 22nd, and 28th. The ballet premiered last season at the Emelin Theater with four sold-out shows. The Nutcracker Dream is a one-hour long ballet created by choreographer, Carole Alexis who was inspired by The Nutcracker Ballet from Marius Petipa’s choreography.

The Nutcracker “ Le Casse-Noisette”  is based on the 19th-century author, Alexandre Dumas’s book, “ L’histoire du Casse-Noisette” which was written in 1844 and by the tales of E.T Hoffman, “ Casse-Noisette et le Roi des Souris”. This story was adapted into a ballet, The Nutcracker by French choreographer, Marius Petipa, and Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The first Nutcracker performance took place on December 18th,1892  at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint-Petersburg. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is famously known for composing two other ballets: Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. The Nutcracker is presented in two acts which tells Marie’s story, a young lady who receives a wooden nutcracker in the form of a toy soldier for Christmas Eve from her Uncle Drosselmeyer during her family and friends Christmas gathering.   When the evening comes, all of the guests leave. As Marie goes to bed, she starts to dream that her wooden nutcracker transforms into a prince; together they enter a magical place called the Land of Sweets where a celebration from all of the sweets is being presented to her.

The Nutcracker Dream’s audience will step into Marie’s dream as she arrives in The Land of Sweets. The Nutcracker Dream is a family-friendly ballet which is a wonderful way to start the holiday season. Come see the Nutcracker Dream at the Emelin Theatre for a magical experience with friends and family!
