Since the clocks sprung forward early Sunday morning, Daylight Saving has been a popular topic of conversation both in the news and at school. Everyone has opinions on the controversial time-change: some people don’t mind it, but others hate it.

In the past, I didn’t have any opinions on Daylight Saving. However, this year I felt very affected by the time change. I’ve come to the conclusion that changing the clocks is just a dumb idea, and we should stay in Daylight Saving Time all year long.

Changing the clocks twice a year is too much for people to handle. It can lead to serious health repercussions, as crazy as that sounds. You may be thinking, It’s just an hour! How can that be such a big deal? And yes, it is just an hour. But this hour is clearly enough to throw people off balance. The Monday after Daylight Saving, there is a 25% increase in heart attacks (CBS). “Driver fatigue” can lead to dangerous road conditions and more car accidents. Other obvious side effects include worse sleep and daytime tiredness and drowsiness, which could result in less productivity at work or school. So, if there are a number of serious risks associated with changing the clocks, then maybe a smart idea would be to stop changing the clocks. Wouldn’t that make a lot of sense?

Another reason why we should keep Daylight Saving Time permanent is because WHO WANTS THE SUN TO SET AT 4:00? Not me, that’s for sure! In the winter, when the clocks are set back to normal, the sun sets so early, and it’s truly horrible. I hate being home from school for barely an hour before the sun goes down. This means that on school days, we barely get to experience any sunlight at all. Having that extra hour of sunlight makes a huge difference and is worth keeping.

A lot of government officials, including President Trump and representatives in Washington, California, and Florida, are calling for a switch to permanent Daylight Saving Time. After all, we’re not fighting in World War I right now, which was the reason for the first time change. So maybe it’s something we should seriously consider. Maybe permanent Daylight Saving would be great. We won’t know until we try.
