On Thursday afternoon, Bryce Harper agreed to a record breaking 13 year, $330 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. The contract includes no opt outs, meaning that Harper will remain with the team for more than a decade. To put into perspective, a typical Rye High School student will be almost turning 30 years old by the time Harper’s contract expires.

Harper’s deal breaks Giancarlo Stanton’s 13 year, $325 million deal with the Yankees last offseason. Although Manny Machado will be making a higher average salary of $30 million in his 10 year, $300 contract with the San Diego Padres, Bryce Harper shouldn’t be complaining to much about his payload.

Harper turned down a 10 year, $300 million contract with the Washington Nationals several weeks ago. Many people are questioning why Harper would turn down a higher average salary from the Nationals in order to play with the Phillies. In addition, he is signed with Philly for 13 years, so he better like the team’s outlook and pieces, or else he will be very unhappy. On the other hand, if he was going to convince others to join him chasing championships in Philadelphia, players would want to know he wasn’t going anywhere. In his contract, Harper, nor the Phillies can leave the settlements of the deal. He cannot be traded or bought out by the Phillies.

The Phillies also signed 2013 MVP Andrew McCutchen earlier this offseason to bolster their outfield along with Harper.

Bryce Harper; the rookie of the year, 6x All-Star, and 2015 MVP has 922 hits, 184 home runs and a (.279) batting average throughout his career.

In 159 games last season, Harper recorded 137 hits, 34 home runs and a (.249) batting average.
