Its official! “YouTube Rewind 2018” is one of the most disliked and hated videos on YouTube. Although the views went up to 119 Million, the video seems to have not gone over well with the YouTube community. The number of dislikes surpassed Justin Bieber’s ¨Baby” music video, which has over 10 million dislikes as well.  However, his dislikes racked over 8 years. YouTube Rewind took less than 8 days to rack up the dislikes, with 82% of viewers honestly admitting that they didn’t like the video.

However, where did the other dislikes come from? The story of how so many anonymous dislikes got clicked became pretty funny. It became obvious that it was Justin Bieber fans trying to get any video to top the number of dislikes of the “Baby” music video.

Many Justin Bieber fans made comments and tweets saying how happy they were that Justin Bieber’s ¨Baby¨ video is no longer the most hated video. Some even claimed to hit the dislike video of YouTube´s Rewind video just to bump Justin’s video off the number one spot for the most hated video, which seemed to have happened for some of the dislikes.

What about the YouTubers in the video? How did they feel about it? It seemed that a lot of YouTube artists also admit that this year’s compilation wasn’t their favorite either. Artists like Marques Brownlee, addressed the controversy and decided to make another YouTube Rewind video of his own. Marques said, “I think the problem with YouTube Rewind, at least how I see it, is pretty simple actually,” Brownlee said in a video, “YouTubers and creators and audiences see it as one thing and, YouTube, who’s in charge of making it, sees it as something completely different.”  It seems like he was right. Many seemed to complain that the 2018 video really didn’t contain a lot of the new and already popular YouTube stars. This is something that many people say is completely defeating the purpose of YouTube Rewind itself, since it was meant to look back on some of the year’s most popular and controversial events on YouTube. When many YouTubers think of some of the years most memorable moments, people point fingers at  Logan Paul’s controversy surrounding his time in Japan’s Aokigahara forest and the seemingly never-ending battle between PewDiePie and Bollywood production company T-Series. 2018 also had a lot of breakups as well as the rise of “Johnny Johnny Yes Papa” as a phenomenon, along with Shane Dawson ruling the digital space by reimagining what YouTubers could create.

The 2018 video seemed to have struck a nerve in many people by not being true to what happened during the year. With this, loyal YouTubers have became disappointed in the company and their productions. Hopefully YouTube will come around in the New Year and have a better Rewind video for 2019.
