For the past week or so, there have been dozens of violent protests in Paris regarding a controversial new fuel tax meant to limit climate change. Although this obviously had good intentions, it caused violent uproar as it greatly raised the median household costs, and the French president, Emmanuel Macron, has been called a rich snob who is out of touch with the people. These protests escalated very quickly, culminating in tear gas use by police on the protesters after battles in the streets. The protesters, who wear yellow jackets (hence the name of the movement) have taken and lost numerous important areas in the city, most significantly the historic Arc de Triomphe.

As of late, Macron has announced that he will not pass the despised fuel tax because of the protests, which have led to hundreds of arrests and lots of injuries on both sides. It seems as if the protests are calming down now, but the protests showed how willing many people are to engage in violent protests, and how influential those protests can be.
