On November 3 2018, Saturday Night Live’s popular comedian, Pete Davidson, made a controversial joke about ex-Lieutenant and Congressman-Elect Dan Crenshaw’s eyepatch, saying ‘you’de be surprised to hear that he’s a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hit man in a porno movie’. Crenshaw, who lost his eye due to a wound from fighting in Afghanistan, was not too pleased about this comment, and neither was the rest of America, believing that although Davidson’s comedy tends to be rather dark, he crossed the line with this joke. Crenshaw however took to social media to express that he did not understand why the public was demanding Davidson to apologize after the mistake he made, and wrote, ‘Was I really outraged by SNL? Really offended? Or did I just think the comment about losing my eye was offensive? There is a difference, after all. I have been literally shot at before, and I wasn’t outraged. Why start now?’

SNL received a lot of backlash after the episode aired, and they then proceeded to invite Crenshaw onto last Saturday’s show, which ironically was Veterans Day weekend, to use the opportunity to of course, poke fun at Pete Davidson, but also to spread the message of unity and appreciation for veterans. SNL handled the situation with humble and good humour, and the two declared that ‘it was all good’. Crenshaw addressed Davidson with class rather than anger, and he managed to slip in a few jokes in there too, such as pausing to answer a phone call with the ringtone of one of Ariana Grande’s songs – who Pete Davidson very recently split with. The apology could not have been executed better and I highly recommend checking it out:
