On Tuesday, the draft order of June’s 2018 NBA Draft was selected. Fans across the league have watched big names like Deandre Ayton, Marvin Bagley III, and Mohamed Bamba all year in the NCAA. When fans look at mock drafts however, all of the experts have some foreign guy named Luka Doncic going in the top 2. Who is he?

Doncic is the best international prospect in NBA history. On Real Madrid, one of the world’s best basketball teams, Doncic is averaging 17 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds against the Euroleague, the second best league in the world — AND he just turned 19 years old. When Porzingis came out of the Euroleague, he was averaging 5 minutes per game to go along with about 5 points.

Doncic is 6 foot 8 and 220 pounds — a smaller, less athletic version of Ben Simmons. Doncic, unlike Simmons, can actually shoot. Like Simmons, Doncic is considered a point guard despite his size. His best skill is his ability to run an offense. He’s advanced in every facet of basketball, and the only thing that really needs improvement is his lack of lateral speed and quickness. Supposedly, Doncic still isn’t sure if he is entering the NBA draft, but that’s probably only because his season hasn’t ended yet. Him talking about the NBA is like Deandre Ayton talking about the draft just before a Final Four game.

He’ll likely go to the Kings at number 2, but could also leapfrog Ayton and get drafted first overall by the Suns. Celtics fan Thomas Flaherty said “The Celtics should trade Hayward to get Doncic, right now.” Knicks fan John Goldszer said that “a trio of Ntilikina, Porzingis, and Doncic would be the best trio in NBA history.” That may be true, but it looks like the Knicks and Celtics will have to wait until the 2022 offseason to sign him.
