This week’s athlete of the week is Elena Perez-Segnini, a member of the Rye High School girls winter track and field team. She participates in the winter and spring track and field teams but runs cross country in the fall. Her best meet this year was leagues when she won the league in the girls 1000 meters and 3200-meter relay.

Elena is a huge record holder for Rye High School. She currently holds the school record in the 1000 meters, the girls 3200-meter relay in winter, and the girls distance medley relay. She also has the freshman, sophomore and junior record for the girls 1000 meters and the freshman record for the girls 800 meters and 400 meters.

After certain meets, Elena said, “The team will go to McDonald’s on the bus ride home which is always fun.” She also commented, “I have the superstition that every meet the last song I listen to on the bus is Runaway by Galantis and I’ve been doing that since freshman year for good luck.” Clearly, that song has done justice for her considering the number of records she holds at the school. Elena is definitely considering running in college, but she is waiting to see how well she will run this winter and spring season.
